Who am I?

Who am I? Why am I here on this earth? This is a question that many people in our culture ask. Many people are confused, hurting, lost, and purposeless. Two weeks ago I shared from Genesis 1:26-31 about God creating humankind and seeking a relationship with us. Let me share that with you again:

Then God said, “Let us make man[a] in our image, after our likeness. And let them have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over the livestock and over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.”

27 So God created man in his own image,
    in the image of God he created him;
    male and female he created them.

28 And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.” 29 And God said, “Behold, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food. 30 And to every beast of the earth and to every bird of the heavens and to everything that creeps on the earth, everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food.” And it was so. 31 And God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day.

God created you in His image and likeness. The Creator of all things created you to CREATE. What and how you create is as unique as you are! The Great Imaginer created you with a wonderful and unique imagination! The King of kings, Ruler of the Universe, created you with the gift of leadership. God the Father who loves to walk and talk with His children and has pursued a relationship with humankind since creation, created you with compassion, love, mercy, and a desire for relationship. I could go on with more examples of how we were created in the image of God.

The devil, our adversary, doesn’t want this for us. He is the one who tries to steal our inheritance and calling by spreading confusion. My poem, Unfinished Sculpture speaks about this.

Unfinished Sculpture

Who am I
deep down inside
where no one else can see?

Who am I
locked deep within
where the Lord’s sculpting me?

What am I?
A prisoner –
the real me locked away.

What am I?
A work in progress
that Christ chisels and flays.

Who am I?
A masterpiece –
soon beautiful and free!

Yes, I am a masterpiece. You are a masterpiece. He is working on us and refining us and will continue to do so until we step into eternity. Psalm 139:13-16 reads:

“For you formed my inward parts:
You knitted me together in my mother’s womb.
I praise you for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very well.
My frame was not hidden from you,
when I was being made in secret,
intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
in your book were written, every one of them,
the days that were formed for me,
when as yet there was none of them.”

God was involved as you grew and developed as an embryo in your mother’s womb. He is the one who formed you and knitted you together. God saw you. God knew you. He still sees you and He still knows you. God planned you. In fact, He even has a book that has every one of the days that were planned for you recorded in it! He loves you that much!!!!

God thought of you and made plans for you even before you were formed in your mother’s womb! He planned you – placing your talents and gifts in you. He has a mission and purpose for you on this earth! The enemy on the other hand, wants to destroy God’s plans. The enemy wants to steal your identity, your calling, and your purpose. He tried to waylay, confuse, and discourage you so you lose your purpose, are confused about your identity, don’t find or use your talents and gifts, and don’t walk in your calling. We are in a battle over our identity. Who will we allow to win the battle? Will we claim our God-given identity or will we allow the devil to steal it from us?

What part of your identity are you struggling with right now? I encourage you sometime today to take the time to ask God about it and then write down what you feel him replying to you. When I did this a few years ago, Abba (Daddy God) showed me that He created me to be a confident Princess Warrior. He told me that is my identity and how He sees me. At that time I felt very insecure and like I didn’t have a voice. I saw myself as a timid, little mouse. After He told me how He saw me, I found Bible verses to go with the picture of the confident warrior princess and I meditated on them and the blessing He gave me. Ask God who He created you to be and how He sees you. Then write down what He shows you. Repeat those blessings over yourself. Soon you will be able to see yourself through God’s eyes rather than the eyes of the enemy. Let’s pray.

Lord, I thank you for each person who reads this post. You know each one. You know their struggles. You know their fears. You know what battle they are in over their identity, their purpose, and/or their calling. I ask that you reveal to them how you see them. May they see themselves through your eyes. As they ask you how you see them reveal to who you created them to be – their calling, purpose, giftings, talents – through pictures, visions, and words that are meaningful and special to them. Lord, may they feel that love you have for them. Oh, man! You love them, God. You love them so much! May they see that, feel that, and know that deep within their innermost being! Lord, I pray a special blessing over each one. May they know that you formed their innermost parts. May they know that you knitted them together in their mother’s womb. May they see that they are fearfully and wonderfully made. May they see that they have a purpose. That you created them with an identity – a special calling and purpose. May they see that! I just ask you to surround each one with your heavenly warriors. That they can protect and shield each on from the fiery darts and flaming arrows of the enemy – the lies, doubts, fears, and confusion. We just break all that off in Jesus’ name! We replace that with the truth, with peace, with clarity. May they feel your love. May they feel your protection. May they feel hope. I ask all this in your name, Jesus. Amen

May the Lord bless you and keep you. May His face shine upon you. May He be gracious to you. May you feel His peace. May you have a wonderful week! Know that you are loved, are appreciated, and were created for such a time as this. May you have a blessed week!
